Is Windows getting the sudo command? It was just spotted in a leaked Server preview

If you’re familiar with Linux, you’ve most likely used a sudo command at least once to temporarily gain full access to the system.

It seems that Microsoft is planning to add the sudo command to Windows since it was spotted in a leaked Windows Server preview build.

The sudo command is coming to Windows, here’s what you should know

Over the weekend a new server preview build was published to the Windows Update servers by accident.

Keen users have noticed a new option in the For developers section that says Enable sudo. Of course, to access this feature, you need to enable Developer mode on the preview build.

This feature offers some configuration and it allows you to configure how sudo runs applications. The list of options includes a new window, with input disabled, and inline.

We still don’t know how these settings work since sudo still doesn’t work in the leaked build. Since this is a developer feature, it comes with a security warning, so it might pose a security risk if your PC is compromised.

Overall, the addition of sudo is great news for administrators and advanced users who tend to rely on the command line a lot.

Unfortunately, we don’t know when to expect this feature, but we hope to see it soon, especially because Microsoft has big plans for Windows. Maybe we’ll see this feature in Windows Server 2025? Only time will tell.
