Teams to Soon Add Pre-Join Mic Test to Fix the Universal “Can You Hear Me?” Problem
The feature will start rolling out next month
Once in a while, in Teams meetings, you may have asked your colleague whether you are audible or not. Well, that very awkward moment is likely to be reduced soon, all thanks to Microsoft. According to an official Microsoft 365 roadmap entry, the company is developing a feature to test audio before you even join a call (via Neowin).
The upcoming Teams feature (Roadmap ID 560074) will allow you to check your microphone and speaker directly from the pre-join screen. Per the roadmap entry, the feature is expected to start rolling out in May 2026 across desktop and Mac platforms.
So, how exactly would the feature work, you may ask, right? Well, you can select a “Test mic and speaker” option, then record a short audio clip and play it back instantly. You should be able to confirm that the correct devices are selected and working properly before entering the meeting. That might sound like a minor change, but it addresses a common frustration.
The roadmap entry hints that the feature will be available across multiple cloud environments, including standard worldwide deployments as well as GCC High and DoD setups. Microsoft has tagged it for general availability, which means it will be available for everyone down the line.
Let’s not forget that Microsoft will soon retire legacy Teams meeting controls on Windows and macOS, along with a new voice and face enrollment dashboard for admins. That’s not all; Teams received a bunch of features in March. You can read more about it in our separate roundup here.
