Teams to Soon Detect and Warn Users About Brand Impersonation Calls
In the past few months Microsoft has added a few new features to Teams and has plans to add more down the line. Now, it seems, the company has yet another safety feature in its pipeline for Teams Calling, which looks to curb the growing concern around scam calls and impersonation attempts. The new feature, called Brand Impersonation Protection, is now scheduled to begin rolling out in mid-May 2026 after a slight delay from earlier timelines.
Brand Impersonation Protection for Teams Calling is coming mid-May
The feature is designed to detect suspicious inbound calls, especially from first-time external callers who may try to pose as trusted brands. When a potential risk is identified, users will see a warning before answering the call, giving them a chance to decide how to proceed.
In some cases, these alerts may continue during the call if risk signals remain. Users can then choose to accept, block, or end the call based on the warning shown. At a time when social engineering attacks are becoming more common, this move appears to be part of Microsoft’s broader push to strengthen identity protection across its platforms.
Here’s a quick look at what you can expect:
- Teams will evaluate inbound calls for signs of brand impersonation.
- Users will see high-risk call warnings before answering suspicious calls.
- Warnings may continue during the call if risk signals persist.
- Users can accept, block, or end the call.
- The feature will be enabled by default.
- Existing Teams Calling policies remain unchanged.
The rollout is expected to start in mid-May and complete by late May for targeted release users, while general availability timeline is still unclear. The feature will be enabled by default, as Microsoft says existing Teams Calling policies will remain unchanged.
That being said, organizations may still want to prepare internally. Helpdesk teams could start seeing queries once users notice these warnings, and training materials may need slight updates to reflect the new experience.
