Microsoft released the latest Patch Tuesday update, KB5041571, for Windows 11 24H2 on Copilot+ PCs, and it’s packed with crucial changes and improvements.
First, this update enhances security on your Windows operating system, so it’s important to install it as soon as possible. KB5041571 also includes fixes from a previous update (KB5040529, released in July), so if you missed that, you’re now all caught up.
Now, into the details. One of the critical issues addressed with KB5041571 is related to the lock screen. Specifically, the update tackles CVE-2024-38143 (it also affects the other Windows 11 versions), which means you won’t find the “Use my Windows user account” checkbox for Wi-Fi connections on the lock screen anymore. It’s a small change, but it’s all in the name of security.
Another interesting point is the removal of the NetJoinLegacyAccountReuse registry key. This might ring some bells for the tech-savvy, but for the rest of us, it’s enough to know that it’s a move towards tightening security protocols during domain joins.
For those who love dual-booting with Linux, there’s an important note. The update applies Secure Boot Advanced Targeting (SBAT) to prevent vulnerable Linux EFI (Shim bootloaders) from running. However, don’t worry if you’re a dual-boot user; this update won’t affect your setup. But, if you’re using older Linux ISO images, you might face boot issues, so it’s wise to check in with your Linux vendor for an updated ISO image.
DNS server security is also getting a boost to fend off CVE-2024-37968. If your domain configurations aren’t current, you might encounter a SERVFAIL error or experience timeouts. This is a heads-up to ensure your settings are current to avoid any hiccups.
However, it’s not all smooth sailing. With KB5041571, there’s a known issue where Arm device users might struggle to download and play Roblox via the Microsoft Store. You can still grab the game directly from Roblox’s website.
Getting this update is easy: it will automatically download and install via Windows Update. For those who are offline, there’s always the option to download it from the Microsoft Catalog.
