Microsoft just released the KB5052078 patch to Windows 11 insiders of the Beta Channel. The update brings a major enhancement to the operating system’s ability to share files.
More specifically, Windows 11 users will be able to drag and drop files from the File Explorer menus onto the top of the desktop. The operating system will then open a new tray that allows them to drop the file into one of the many apps currently on the tray.
Even more, this new tray can be customized to display the most used platforms in Windows 11, and it even has a More option that allows users to share the files this way on various apps.
Sharing files in Windows is getting a lot easier and quicker with our new drag tray feature. When you start dragging a local file with mouse (or touch) from File Explorer or your desktop, a handy tray appears at the very top of your screen allowing you to drop the file into one of the displayed apps or choose “More…” to open the Windows share window.
The new ability is currently rolling out to users in the Windows Insider Program and will be available to the Stable Channel in the next few months.
KB5052078 also comes with other features, such as the new All page in the Start menu. This new page will contain the grid and category view and should make it easier for users to access everything in just a few seconds. The Redmond-based tech giant teased this feature a while ago in another Insider channel.
However, as with every new feature, this one has some known issues: a delay in app icons when installing a new app. Microsoft is working on it, which will be fixed in a future patch.
