Windows 10 lock screen

A couple of days ago, Microsoft released the KB5034203 package to Windows 10, and with it, the operating system took its first steps to become EEA-compliant. However, the Redmond-based tech giant also introduced the new lock screen experience to Windows 10, after the company released it to Windows 11 a while ago.

The new lock screen experience promises a detailed weather forecast that users can interact with without having to log into Windows 10.

New! The coming weeks will bring a richer weather experience to your lock screen. This includes dynamic, interactive weather updates. So, as you hover over the weather on your lock screen, you will see more information. When you tap or click on the weather card and sign in, Microsoft Edge opens with the full forecast in MSN weather. If you already use Weather in Settings > Personalization > lock screen > Lock screen status, there is nothing for you to do. Also, this new experience will be on by default if Lock screen status is set to “None.” Like today, lock screen status will be available when you lock your screen no matter which personalization option you select (Windows spotlight, Picture, or Slideshow).

It seems that the new lock screen experience is causing some frustrating bugs in Windows 10 already, though.

As Windows enthusiast, Albacore, puts it on X (formerly known as Twitter), the code for the new weather experience on the Windows 10 lock screen is piped from File Explorer, and in doing so, it causes a lot of trouble in other Windows 10 areas, such as the News widget in the taskbar.

It’s incredible how janky the new Windows 10 lock screen weather code is. It gets piped from File Explorer (which is the entry point to News and Interests where the data comes from) to SearchApp (which hosts N&I) to WPN (push notif internals) and then crashes because JSON too big

The Windows enthusiast also notes that the bug is frustrating, as the lock screen Weather experience is rendering the News widget unusable, and the two can’t properly function at the same time.Windows 10 lock screen

Having to disable Weather on the lockscreen so I can access News in the taskbar is the sort of engineering prowess big IT brings us in 2024. God bless.

It’s not yet known if all Windows 10 users are facing this issue, but the feature was just released so it might take a while until it becomes fully stable and functional.

But if you’re currently dealing with it, let us know.
