Valve Removes Another Free Game from Steam Store Over Alleged Malware & Data Theft
PC players downloading random free games on Valve’s Steam platform may want to start being cautious now. A newly removed title called Beyond the Dark is reportedly the latest game caught distributing malware, and the way it allegedly bypassed Steam’s systems is what’s making the situation look far worse. Back in March, FBI has launched probe into malware infected games on Valve’s Steam store.
Valve reportedly pulled the game after malware claims surfaced
The game presented itself as a free survival horror experience. However, cybersecurity YouTuber Eric Parker claims the project secretly contained malicious software hidden inside a modified UnityPlayer.dll file. For those unaware, that file is commonly used in games built with the Unity engine, which apparently made the malware much harder to spot immediately.
Following Parker’s investigation video, Valve removed Beyond the Dark from Steam entirely (via MP1st). However, users who already downloaded the game could potentially remain exposed if the claims turn out accurate. The malware allegedly targeted personal user information. As of now, the full scale of possible impact remains unclear.
Reports suggest the title first appeared on Steam months ago under a completely different identity called Rodent Race. Back then, it reportedly looked and behaved like an entirely separate game. Fast forward to earlier this month, the developers allegedly started changing assets, descriptions, branding, and core files before eventually turning it into Beyond the Dark.
Needless to say, Steam’s security checking process is now under massive scrutiny. The platform reportedly performs deeper checks during a game’s original approval phase, but large post-launch changes may not receive the same level of scrutiny afterward. If true, that creates a dangerous loophole.
For a storefront handling millions of downloads daily, repeated incidents like this are starting to chip away at player trust fast.
