improved app lock in WhatsApp beta on Android

WhatsApp is testing a new app lock in Beta version 2.24.6.20 on Android, which will allow users to employ a wider array of authentication methods to unlock the app, including face detection, fingerprint, and passcode. This will enhance the whole WhatsApp experience.

The information was first shared by WABetaInfo in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The feature description reads, When enabled, you’ll need to use fingerprint, face or other unique identifiers to open WhatsApp. You can still answer calls if WhatsApp is locked.

Based on reports, the feature is currently not available to everyone who updates the app. Surprisingly, a few users have claimed that the improved app lock was already available in WhatsApp beta version 2.24.6.19 on Android, though we couldn’t independently confirm the claim.

As for the WhatsApp beta version 2.24.6.20 on Android, it’s reportedly highly unstable and keeps crashing on launch. Several users shared this on X and other forums.

Critically bugged. App immediately crashes. Completely unusable.

I am unable to open the application with the latest Beta update.

At the moment, experts recommend against installing this bugged WhatsApp beta version 2.24.6.20 and waiting for the subsequent release, which hopefully features a patch.

Last month, WhatsApp beta simplified navigating through stories on Android. Around the same time, a new feature in WhatsApp Beta for Windows allowed users to create stickers.
