Microsoft has released Windows 11 Insider Experimental Preview Build 26300.8687, introducing a new unified Windows Update experience designed to simplify how updates are delivered to users.

Microsoft Wants Fewer Restarts With Unified Windows Updates

One of the most significant changes in Build 26300.8687 is Microsoft’s effort to unify the Windows Update process.

Currently, Windows devices may receive separate updates for drivers, firmware, .NET components, and monthly security patches. Microsoft is now coordinating these update categories so they can be installed together.

According to the company, this approach should reduce disruption and help users spend less time dealing with multiple update cycles and reboots.

File Explorer Gets Better Tab Navigation

Microsoft continues refining File Explorer’s tabbed experience. Users can now middle-click folders in the Address Bar to open them directly in a new tab. The same behavior now works for folders displayed on the Home page.

Microsoft also improved accessibility within File Explorer. Screen readers now provide better announcements when users encounter file conflict dialogs, while the interface responds more effectively when larger text scaling settings are enabled.

Windows Search Becomes More Forgiving

Search can now better understand spelling mistakes, missing characters, extra letters, and partial search terms when looking for applications.

This means users should find apps more easily even when they do not enter the exact app name.

Microsoft has also improved Settings search ranking. More relevant results should now appear closer to the top of the results list, helping users locate system settings faster.

Taskbar, Setup, and Emoji Improvements

Taskbar reliability has improved, particularly when loading the system tray area. Microsoft also fixed an issue that could cause tooltips to appear over the Start menu icon when the taskbar was positioned in alternate locations.

Additional visual issues affecting small taskbar icons have also been resolved.

Windows Setup now provides more information about parental controls during device setup, helping families better understand the protections available to them.

Meanwhile, the emoji panel now uses GIPHY as its GIF provider following the retirement of Tenor support.

Reliability and Accessibility Fixes

Microsoft addressed a number of bugs reported by Insider testers. The company fixed an issue that could cause the mouse cursor to move in the wrong direction on portrait-oriented secondary monitors.

A new remote recovery management plug-in has also been added. The feature expands Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) management capabilities for Mobile Device Management (MDM) providers.

Additional fixes include resolving an audio issue affecting some Insider devices after recent flights, addressing reliability problems in Settings > Apps > Installed Apps, fixing freezes involving Search, Notepad, and several other scenarios, and correcting dark mode inconsistencies in Task Manager’s “Run new task” dialog. Task Manager now properly displays the dialog in dark mode when dark mode is enabled system-wide.

Beta Channel Build 26220.8680 Released

Microsoft also released Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.8680 for Beta Channel testers, bringing accessibility improvements, File Explorer fixes, Magnifier enhancements, and the new Screen Tint feature.

Microsoft is also rolling out its Low Latency Profile for Windows 11, aimed at improving responsiveness and reducing app launch delays.

Together with unified updates, smarter search, and File Explorer improvements, these changes continue Microsoft’s efforts to make Windows 11 faster and easier to use.
