Windows 11 KB5074105 Resolves Explorer Freeze at Startup

KB5074105 Explorer Freeze

Microsoft released KB5074105, a non-security Windows 11 update that introduces several new features alongside a long list of fixes.

KB5074105 is an optional update, so users can safely skip it. However, Microsoft points to multiple practical reasons to install it, especially if your system experienced stability problems. We previously covered the broader list of fixes, but Neowin highlighted one of the most important improvements included in this release.

File Explorer freezes at first login finally resolved in KB5074105

One of the most impactful fixes in KB5074105 targets a Windows shell bug where explorer.exe could hang during the first login after startup.

On affected systems, Windows would load without a taskbar, and the entire shell became unresponsive. Users often found themselves unable to open apps, access settings, or interact with the desktop at all.

Microsoft confirms that the update resolves a scenario where certain startup applications caused Explorer.exe to stop responding during the initial sign-in process. Once the fix applies, the desktop and taskbar now load correctly instead of locking users out of basic system functions.

This change directly improves usability, as impacted users previously had no practical way to use their PCs immediately after logging in.

Despite the welcome fix, KB5074105 does not come without problems. Users continue to report camera malfunctions and lock screen issues after installing the update.

In addition, shutdown-related problems persist on systems that use Secure Launch and Virtualization-Based Security (VBS). These issues originate from a previous update and remain unresolved, even after installing KB5074105.

As a result, while the update delivers an important quality-of-life improvement, users should weigh the benefits against the known risks before installing it, especially on systems where stability and secure boot features matter most.

For now, KB5074105 stands as a mixed release: a critical fix for a frustrating login bug, paired with unresolved issues that may still affect certain Windows 11 configurations.
