Windows 11 Notepad May Soon Support Images, Microsoft Teases
Microsoft is expanding Notepad on Windows 11 with image support, continuing its push to modernize the classic app. The feature has been quietly tested internally and recently teased to Windows Insiders.
Microsoft prepares image support for Notepad
According to Windows Latest, Microsoft hinted at the feature in an email sent to Windows Insiders. The preview showcased a new Notepad version that includes an “insert image” toggle.
This addition suggests users will soon be able to insert and view images directly inside Notepad. Early details indicate support for multiple images, similar to how WordPad previously handled embedded visuals.
Part of a broader WordPad replacement strategy
Microsoft removed WordPad from Windows 11, leaving a gap for users who relied on lightweight document editing. Notepad has since received steady updates, including Markdown and table support.
Image support appears to be the next step in that transition. Microsoft is gradually turning Notepad into a more capable editor without fully transforming it into a complex word processor.
Focus remains on performance and simplicity
Despite these upgrades, Microsoft still aims to keep Notepad lightweight. The company plans to ensure that new features, including image support, do not significantly impact performance.
Users will also retain control over the experience. Microsoft allows optional features to be disabled in settings, so those who prefer a minimal text editor can keep it simple.
No release date yet
The image support feature has not been officially released, and Microsoft has not confirmed a public rollout timeline. For now, it remains in testing and preview stages.
While Notepad continues gaining new capabilities, Microsoft appears to be adjusting its AI strategy in other areas. Reports indicate the company has dropped plans to integrate Copilot into Windows 11 notifications and Settings.
Notepad is steadily evolving beyond a basic text editor, closing the gap left by WordPad while maintaining its simplicity. If image support rolls out widely, it could make Notepad a more versatile tool for everyday tasks without sacrificing performance.
