For those who are not familiar with this feature, Task Scheduler is a component tool of Microsoft Windows. It allows you to schedule the PC’s programs/scripts launch at pre-defined times or after specified time intervals.

From what producers announced, Task Scheduler is now available on Windows 11 too. And because it is required to understand better how this can be used, we’ve prepared a dedicated article.

How can I use Windows 11’s Task Scheduler?

1. Try it with Basic Settings

  1. Open the Start menu by hitting the Windows key.
  2. Type task scheduler, then open the app.
  3. Look at the left window pane, then right-click on Task Scheduler Library and select the New Folder option.
  4. Give a name to that folder, then click on OK.
  5. Expand the Task Scheduler Library, then right-click on the folder you’ve just created, and choose to Create Basic Task
  6. Once the Create a Basic Task Wizard window is opened, enter the name and description of the task.
  7. After all is set, click on Next. 
  8. Choose when do you want the task to start, then click on Next.
  9. Now you will be asked to set the time for the program to start. After you set it, click on the Next button.
  10. Then, you’ll have to set the task you want to perform.
  11. After all is set, click on Finish.

2. Use it with Advanced Settings

  1. Follow the first 4 steps from the previous method.
  2. Expand the Task Scheduler Library option, then right-click on the folder you created, and choose to Create Task.
  3. Set a name and description for the task. Note that you can also change the user or group for which you want to run the task.
  4. On the same window, you’ll have more other options to set, like whether to run the program when the user is logged in or run whether logged in or not or whether you want to run it with the highest privileges.
  5. Once done, click on OK. 

2.1 Manage Windows 11’s Task Scheduler Triggers

  1. To specify the triggering condition of the task, click on the Triggers tab, then on the New button.
  2. You can choose to run the task on a schedule, log on, idle, on an event, at task creation/modification, connected or disconnected from the session, etc.
  3. After doing so, click on OK. 

2.2 Adjust Windows 11’s Task Scheduler Actions

  1. To set the action of the task, click on the Actions button, then click on the New button.
  2. You can select whether the action will start a program, send an email, or display a message. Customize the task according to your preferences.
  3. Click on OK to apply the changes.

2.3 Personalize Windows 11’s Task Scheduler Conditions

  1. To adjust the task’s conditions, click on the Conditions tab, then on New.
  2. You can set conditions for idle state, power, and network. Each of them has certain specifications that should be chosen according to your own neccessities.
  3. Click on OK to apply the changes.

2.4 Take a look at Windows 11’s Task Scheduler Settings

  1. You can personalize settings by selecting the Settings tab, then clicking on New.
  2. In this window you can also adjust additional settings that are affecting the behavior of the task.
  3. Once done, click on OK, and the task will be created.

Additional information on how to use Windows 11 Task Scheduler options

  • Start a program – You’ll be asked to select the program/script that you want to start as per the schedule.
  • Send an Email – You’ll have to enter the recipient’s email address along with your email address. You can type in the subject, text and also add an attachment to the email.
  • Display a Message – This will display a message on your screen and you’ll have to add the title as well as the message when you select this option

  • Task idle condition – In idle, you can set conditions like starting the task when your PC is idle for a specific time, stopping when not idle, or restarting when the idle state resume.

What are the most common Windows 11 Task Scheduler problems?

  • Windows Task Scheduler does not start task at next run time – Considering it is a complex tool, this issue might sometimes occur. In these cases, be sure to check if the task trigger is configured in optimal conditions.
  • Scheduled task runs manually but not automatically – This a common problem with Task Scheduler even in the previous OS model. If you get into this trouble, make sure to check if your conditions are properly configured.
