Microsoft deprecated the Location History feature in Windows 11

If you didn’t know, the Location History feature was storing 24 hours of your location data locally, when the Location feature was enabled on your device.

Now, Microsoft removed this feature and announced the change in the Deprecated features document, alongside Suggested actions, Paint 3D, and others.

We are deprecating and removing the Location History feature, an API that allowed Cortana to access 24 hours of device history when location was enabled. With the removal of the Location History feature, location data will no longer be saved locally and the corresponding settings will also be removed from the Privacy & Security > Location page in Settings.

Microsoft added that the Location History will still function as usual. The only change is that the data won’t store the information of your location.

So, the location data won’t be stored locally anymore, but there is no mention about storing this information elsewhere. Recently, we’ve learned that Notepad will collect your data if you log in to the app with a Microsoft account, so anything is possible, right?

The reason for the Location History feature deprecation is to conserve the battery and memory of portable devices and it might be a very good thing.

Of course, you may also disable the Location services from Settings > Privacy & security and only turn it on when you need it.
