Microsoft has recently focused heavily on improving its cloud services and AI features, introducing additions such as a built-in screenshot tool for Copilot and better support for spotting bots during Teams meetings. However, the company continues to invest in its core developer software as well.

Microsoft has now released Windows Terminal 1.24 to the stable channel, alongside Windows Terminal Preview 1.25, introducing new settings tools, performance improvements, and expanded localization.

While Windows Terminal is not a daily tool for most casual users, it remains a key utility for developers, IT professionals, and power users who rely on command-line environments.

Windows Terminal 1.24 adds new extension tools and improvements

The stable Windows Terminal 1.24 update introduces several usability improvements aimed at simplifying customization and improving performance.

One of the most notable additions is a new Extensions Settings page, designed to make extension management easier. Users can now view and configure installed extensions more conveniently without navigating through multiple configuration sections.

The update also expands language support in the Command Palette, allowing more users to interact with Terminal features in their native language.

Another technical improvement is support for Synchronized Output (DEC private mode). This feature helps reduce screen tearing and flickering when Terminal renders large amounts of output, improving readability in high-activity sessions.

Windows Terminal Preview 1.25 introduces new testing features

For users who want to try upcoming capabilities early, Windows Terminal Preview 1.25 brings several additional enhancements.

One of the most practical additions is a new settings search feature. Users can now quickly locate built-in settings, profiles, color schemes, extensions, and actions through a single search interface, making configuration much easier.

Microsoft also added support for the Kitty Keyboard protocol, which improves how keyboard input is handled in advanced terminal workflows.

Localization support has also expanded, with new languages added, including Serbian (Cyrillic) and Ukrainian.

Performance gains and visual updates

Alongside feature updates, Microsoft introduced several technical improvements designed to improve reliability and speed.

The update includes better Unicode character rendering, ensuring more accurate display of complex text and symbols. Performance has also improved, with 10–20% faster I/O throughput thanks to guided build optimizations.

To create a more unified developer experience, Windows Terminal now includes VS Code Modern Dark and Modern Light color schemes, bringing visual consistency between Terminal and Visual Studio Code.

As expected with a new release, Microsoft also included numerous bug fixes and stability improvements.

Microsoft typically releases smaller incremental updates to Windows Terminal, while larger feature updates arrive every few months.

In related news, Microsoft recently shut down the Copilot Real Talk feature, ending the experimental conversational mode that aimed to make the AI assistant more emotionally aware.
