Microsoft Shuts Down Copilot Real Talk as It Refines AI Strategy
Microsoft continues to expand Copilot with new capabilities, such as the upcoming built-in screenshot tool for Copilot in Microsoft 365. However, the company sometimes removes experimental features while refining its broader AI strategy.
According to Windows Latest, Microsoft has now shut down Copilot’s Real Talk mode, and the feature is no longer available to users.
Microsoft Archives Real Talk Chats After Shutting Down the Feature
Users can no longer start new conversations in Real Talk mode. Existing chats have been archived, meaning they remain visible but cannot continue.
Microsoft confirmed that Real Talk was always intended as an experimental feature designed to test new conversation styles for Copilot.
The feature launched in January and focused on making Copilot interactions feel more human-like and emotionally aware.
Designed to make Copilot more conversational
Real Talk differed from the standard Copilot assistant in several ways.
The system could challenge or disagree with a user’s ideas instead of simply agreeing with them. It also showed more personality and conversational depth, using reasoning to better understand the user’s perspective.
Microsoft also added a “Depth” setting, which allowed users to control how emotionally detailed responses would be. For example, conversations could run in a “standard” mode or a more compressed style.
The feature used a writing style that felt more natural and conversational compared to traditional AI assistant responses.
Real Talk could also access stored user context and memory, allowing it to personalize replies and continue conversations more intelligently.
Lessons from the experiment
Although Microsoft removed the feature, the company says the experiment provided valuable insights.
According to Microsoft, testing Real Talk revealed that many users want more from AI assistants than simple validation or neutral answers.
Instead of maintaining Real Talk as a separate feature, Microsoft now plans to integrate its ideas into the main Copilot experience.
This means future Copilot updates could include more personality, deeper reasoning, and better understanding of user perspectives.
Even as some experimental features disappear, Microsoft continues to expand Copilot across its ecosystem.
The company is currently developing new tools such as improved screenshot support inside Copilot interfaces. This upcoming feature aims to let users capture screenshots directly in apps like Excel, Teams, Word, and PowerPoint and send them to Copilot for analysis.
In other recent AI news, Microsoft has also added the GPT-5.4 coding model to GitHub Copilot, expanding the capabilities of its AI developer tools.
