KB5044384

Microsoft has released update KB5044384 for Windows 11 version 24H2, bringing several bug fixes and quality improvements. The update is available to anyone on Windows 11 version 24H2 and is labeled a “C” (non-security) release, meaning it’s separate from the monthly Patch Tuesday updates.

The update also fixes an issue where you can’t sign in to your account from the web because the screen stops responding, allows you to configure the Copilot key on your keyboard to open the Copilot or Microsoft 365 app, and resolves an issue where the WindowsDisk Cleanup app might show the wrong amount of disk space that you can free up in the ‘Windows Update Cleanup’ category.

In terms of new features, KB5044384 adds a detach virtual hard disk button in Settings for VHDs, so that Wi-Fi SSIDs with Unicode characters (like emoji) will display properly in the netsh wlan show networks command. It introduces the Windows Sandbox Client Preview with runtime clipboard redirection, audio and video input control, and more. This preview is available from the Microsoft Store.

Several other changes and a long list of bug fixes are included, including an issue where you cannot view some parts of the UI when you run certain apps, an issue where HTA optional components (OC) are now in ARM64 Windows PE, and more. Check out the full release notes here.

The changelog for this release includes the following:

  • Notifications: You can now stop the suggestions to turn off notifications from certain apps. Select the ellipses (…) in the notification and turn it off. You can also go to Settings > System > Notifications and turn it off. Look for “Notification Suggestions” in the senders list. An entry will only appear in the list after you receive a notification.
  • Wi-Fi password dialog: The dialog now has the Windows 11 visual design. Go to Settings > Network & internet.
  • Narrator: This update adds a new Narrator shortcut. Press the Narrator key + Ctrl + X to copy what the Narrator last spoke to the clipboard. This shortcut is useful when you want to copy some content, like codes or numbers, quickly. It will now auto-read the contents of an email message in the new Outlook. This is like the behavior in Outlook Classic.
  • Gamepad keyboard: This update starts the rollout of a new Gamepad keyboard layout for the on-screen keyboard. With it, you can use your Xbox controller to move around the screen and type. Button accelerators are also available; these include the X button for backspace and the Y button for the spacebar. For better movement patterns, the keyboard keys are aligned vertically.
  • Start menu: “All apps” has the new name, “All.”
  • ALT + Tab: On some PCs, the screen goes black for a few seconds when you switch between certain windows.
  • Scanning apps: They don’t detect specific scanners, although they are connected.

The patch should provide a smooth transition to Windows 11 24H2. The major patch has been quite buggy since its release earlier this month, and the 8.63GB bug wasn’t the only confusion it caused. It also caused major Internet connection issues, and some devices appeared with a deactivated Windows right after installing the patch.

KB5044384 is available now via Windows Update and can be manually downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
