An absolutely ridiculous suggestion

As Microsoft’s latest wave of layoffs hits thousands across the company, many in gaming, one Xbox executive has offered a controversial suggestion. He suggested try AI chatbots for coping with job loss.

In a LinkedIn post that was later deleted (via Aftermath), Xbox Game Studios’ Matt Turnbull said AI tools like ChatGPT and Copilot could help those feeling overwhelmed by job loss.

He suggested that these AI tools are as useful for resume building, career planning, and staying focused when “mental energy is scarce.”

“No AI tool is a replacement for your voice or your lived experience,” Turnbull wrote, “but these tools can help get you unstuck faster, calmer, and with more clarity.”

Microsoft recently laid off up to 9,100 employees, shuttering studios and canceling projects across Xbox Game Studios. At the same time, the company is investing heavily in artificial intelligence, committing $80 billion to AI infrastructure earlier this year.

That dual message didn’t sit well with everyone. While Turnbull likely meant well, his advice drew backlash. On Bluesky, a repost of his comments sparked frustration from developers who see AI as a threat, not a solution, especially in creative fields already hit hard by job cuts.

Turnbull hasn’t explained why he pulled the post, but the timing and tone have left many questioning Microsoft’s priorities.
