XBOX Is Not Leaving Steam Despite Its Bigger PC Push
Microsoft is not planning to stop releasing XBOX games on Steam, despite recent rumors suggesting the company could prioritize its own PC platforms.
The speculation started after comments from the XBOX Two Podcast circulated without their full context. According to Windows Central, Microsoft still intends to support Steam while expanding the wider XBOX ecosystem on Windows.
Gears of War: E-Day reflects this approach. The game will remain exclusive to XBOX consoles, but its PC version will launch through both Steam and the XBOX PC store.
PC gaming will play a larger role in XBOX’s future
Microsoft reportedly sees PC gaming as a central part of its long-term XBOX strategy.
XBOX Helix, the company’s rumored next-generation hardware platform, may operate more like a gaming PC than a traditional closed console. This approach could give players greater access to PC stores, games, and services while retaining XBOX features.
Microsoft also continues investing in XBOX Game Pass. The subscription gives PC players a lower-cost alternative to buying every game individually through Steam.
Microsoft is also optimizing Windows to reduce the gaming performance gap with Linux-based systems such as SteamOS.
Microsoft could expand Battle.net
Microsoft and Blizzard have reportedly considered opening Battle.net to third-party publishers and developers.
Battle.net already has a large player base and hosts Blizzard games such as World of Warcraft and Heroes of the Storm. Microsoft has also tested distributing XBOX games through the platform.
However, it remains unclear whether the Battle.net expansion will continue under XBOX CEO Asha Sharma.
Battle.net and the XBOX PC app already connect through the app’s plugin system. Microsoft is also working with publishers such as Ubisoft and EA to integrate their stores and game libraries.
Some Ubisoft games purchased on XBOX already include access to the corresponding PC versions at no additional cost.
XBOX wants to connect every gaming platform
Microsoft appears focused on building a connected gaming ecosystem rather than replacing Steam.
Its strategy combines XBOX Game Pass, the XBOX PC store, Battle.net, publisher launcher integrations, XBOX Play Anywhere, cloud gaming, and backward compatibility on PC.
The company wants players to move more easily between XBOX consoles, PCs, handheld devices, and cloud gaming sessions.
Microsoft still faces several problems. The XBOX PC store trails Steam in performance, search quality, curation, reliability, and overall polish. Cross-platform features also remain inconsistent between games.
Microsoft will need to improve the XBOX PC app’s speed, search tools, game selection, and cross-platform support for this strategy to succeed.
The company is also preparing additional XBOX ecosystem features. A leaked XBOX roadmap suggests that disc-to-digital support could arrive soon, while support for additional XBOX 360 games may follow in 2027 or 2028.
