As the holiday season approaches, Xbox is reminding parents to focus on creating safe, child-friendly gaming experiences when setting up a new console. In a recent blog post, Microsoft outlined clear guidelines designed to help families manage screen time, content access, and online interactions from day one.

Microsoft outlines guidelines for kids and parents for this holiday season

During the initial console setup, Xbox recommends selecting “Yes” when asked if the device will be used by kids. This option unlocks child-focused settings that allow parents to tailor the experience based on age and maturity level. Instead of letting children use an existing adult profile, Microsoft strongly encourages creating a separate child account. This approach gives parents better oversight and ensures games, features, and interactions stay age-appropriate.

To simplify management, Xbox also points parents to the Xbox Family Settings app, available on both Android and iOS. The app lets parents control their child’s gaming activity remotely and in real time. You can set daily screen time limits, approve or deny requests for extra playtime, and pause gaming sessions instantly if needed.

The app also allows parents to restrict games and media based on selected maturity ratings, approve or block purchases to avoid surprise charges, and manage online communication settings. Options range from blocking all chat features to allowing interactions with friends only. Weekly activity summaries provide insight into what games children play and how much time they spend on them.

Microsoft says these steps help create a safer and more balanced Xbox experience for kids. With more than 20 new games coming to Xbox, now is a good time for families to set up the right controls before the holiday rush begins.
