Xbox Under Fire as Low-Effort Achievement Games Flood the Store

We recently saw Developer Direct showcase several high-quality upcoming games, but a growing problem continues to shadow the Xbox platform. Despite strong first-party announcements, Xbox struggles with a surge of low-effort titles designed primarily to farm achievements.

As Windows Central reports, new data from TrueAchievements reveals that nearly 40 percent of all Xbox games released in 2025 qualify as so-called “Gamerscore spam” or shovelware. Developers design these titles to deliver easy achievements rather than meaningful gameplay.

Shovelware releases spike dramatically in 2025

Out of roughly 2,200 games released on Xbox last year, about 880 fell into the shovelware category. That marks a 204 percent increase compared to 2024, when analysts identified around 290 similar titles.

This wave of low-effort games injected millions of Gamerscore points into the Xbox ecosystem. According to the report, shovelware alone accounted for more than 21,600 achievements and over two million Gamerscore points, heavily skewing achievement totals across the platform.

Achievement value and discovery concerns grow

Critics argue that the explosion of easy-achievement games cheapens the value of Gamerscore and undermines players who pursue achievements through skill or long-term commitment. Storefront discovery also suffers, as genuine indie and premium titles struggle to stand out among hundreds of near-identical releases.

The situation has reignited broader concerns around moderation, quality control, and long-term trust in digital storefronts tied to achievement systems.

In contrast, Sony has already taken action on similar issues. The company previously removed large numbers of shovelware titles from the PlayStation Store, signaling a more aggressive approach to maintaining storefront quality.

Whether Xbox plans to follow a similar path remains unclear, but the growing volume of shovelware continues to fuel debate within the gaming community.

Meanwhile, Microsoft may be preparing a second Xbox Developer Direct later this year. On the PlayStation side, recent leaks suggest that Undisputed could join PlayStation Plus in February 2026, adding another major title to Sony’s subscription lineup.
