Xbox’s Leaked Project Green Leaf Could Improve Windows Gaming Handheld Efficiency
Rollout reportedly planned for May or June 2026
Microsoft is reportedly continuing its push into handheld gaming optimization through a leaked internal initiative called “Project Green Leaf.” According to reports (via Wccftech), the project focuses on improving battery life and power efficiency for Windows-based gaming handhelds.
The effort allegedly targets one of the biggest weaknesses of Windows handheld gaming PCs compared to devices like the Steam Deck: power efficiency and battery endurance.
Microsoft reportedly targeting better handheld efficiency
Project Green Leaf is said to integrate new power-saving technologies directly into the Xbox Game Development Kit (GDK). The reported goal is to help developers reduce unnecessary power consumption without heavily impacting gameplay quality.
The project allegedly introduces two new performance profiles called PO (Power Optimized) and PO+ (Power Optimized Plus). These modes would allow games to dynamically reduce power usage during less demanding gameplay moments.
Developers would reportedly need to implement features such as resolution scaling and performance caps during menus, lobbies, or lower-intensity gameplay sections.
Internal testing reportedly showed major gains
According to the leak, Microsoft internally tested the technology using Fortnite. The company allegedly achieved up to 30% lower power consumption during testing scenarios.
If accurate, those improvements could significantly extend battery life on Windows gaming handhelds, an area where many current devices still struggle.
Microsoft reportedly wants to narrow the efficiency gap between dedicated handheld operating systems and traditional Windows-based gaming devices.
Rollout could happen later this year
Project Green Leaf reportedly could begin rolling out as early as May or June 2026, though Microsoft has not officially confirmed the initiative.
The report also arrives while Xbox continues working on several broader gaming projects. More details about Project Helix are still expected later this year, while Microsoft’s long-term stance on platform exclusives remains unclear.
Meanwhile, Xbox Mode on Windows 11 recently faced criticism after reports claimed it currently causes issues with secondary monitor setups during gameplay.
