Windows 11 Xbox Mode Leaves Secondary Displays Blank While Gaming

Microsoft has yet to comment on Xbox Mode’s multi-monitor limitation

Microsoft’s new Xbox Mode for Windows 11 currently disables secondary monitors, leaving only the main display active while gaming, as VideoCardz reports. The issue appears to affect multi-monitor desktop setups, where secondary screens show only a blank image while Xbox Mode is enabled.

The feature aims to deliver a console-style full-screen gaming experience for Windows 11 PCs and gaming handhelds. Xbox Mode focuses on reducing background distractions, prioritizing games, and combining libraries from Xbox Game Pass alongside other PC storefronts into one controller-friendly interface.

Secondary monitors stop working in Xbox Mode

While the primary monitor continues working normally, secondary displays reportedly become unusable once Xbox Mode launches. This creates a major limitation for desktop PC players who depend on extra screens during gameplay.

Many gamers use secondary monitors for Discord chats, walkthrough videos, OBS streaming controls, browser tabs, music playback, or hardware monitoring tools. Xbox Mode currently prevents those workflows because the additional screens remain blank instead of displaying active applications.

The limitation feels especially restrictive for streamers and competitive players who regularly multitask while gaming.

Feature appears designed mainly for handhelds and TVs

The behavior likely comes from Xbox Mode’s original design goals. Microsoft appears to have built the interface primarily around handheld gaming PCs and TV-based gaming setups where users typically rely on a single screen.

In those environments, a simplified distraction-free interface makes more sense. The feature creates a cleaner console-inspired experience similar to what players expect from dedicated gaming hardware.

Desktop PC gaming, however, works differently. Multi-monitor setups remain extremely common among enthusiasts, and many players expect background apps and companion tools to stay accessible while gaming.

Xbox Mode still evolving

Despite the current limitation, Xbox Mode remains one of Microsoft’s bigger attempts to unify the Windows and Xbox gaming experiences. The company continues pushing controller-focused navigation and aggregated game libraries across Windows devices.

Microsoft has not yet confirmed whether secondary monitor support will improve before wider rollout. Given how common multi-monitor gaming has become, many users will likely expect better desktop functionality in future updates.

In other Xbox-related news, Microsoft recently confirmed that more details about Project Helix will arrive later this year. The company also still has not committed to a firm long-term strategy regarding exclusive games.
