Microsoft Teams to Get AI Language Detection and Video Recap Features in April

microsoft teams upcoming ai features

Microsoft is continuing to expand the AI capabilities of Microsoft Teams with two new features designed to improve meeting accessibility and summaries. The announcement comes shortly after Microsoft confirmed it will stop sending email notifications for Teams recordings, signaling broader changes to how meeting content is managed.

AI language detection aims to improve multilingual meetings

According to Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 558543, Microsoft is developing an AI-powered feature that automatically detects the spoken language of each participant during Teams meetings.

The system will analyze speech in real time and automatically switch live captions and transcripts to the detected language. This should make it easier to follow conversations in meetings where participants switch between languages or dialects.

To enable the feature, meeting organizers will need to activate Interpreter mode or multilingual speech recognition.

Previously, users had to manually change the language setting whenever the speaker changed languages. If the language setting was not updated correctly, the resulting transcript could become inaccurate or difficult to read.

Automatic language detection aims to remove this manual step and improve the reliability of multilingual meeting transcripts.

AI video recap will generate narrated meeting highlights

Microsoft is also developing a new AI-powered video recap feature for Teams meeting summaries, according to Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 558540.

The system will automatically generate narrated highlight videos from recorded meetings. These AI-created recaps will summarize key moments and discussions without requiring users to watch the entire recording.

The feature appears similar to AI-generated highlight videos used in apps like Google Photos or iCloud Photos, but tailored specifically for meeting content.

At this stage, it remains unclear whether organizations or users will be able to disable automatic video recap generation.

Android transcription support also coming to Teams

In addition to these AI updates, Microsoft previously announced Live Meeting Transcription support for Microsoft Teams on Android, expanding accessibility features across mobile devices.

The update will allow participants to view real-time transcription during meetings directly on Android-powered Teams devices.

Microsoft is also preparing to reintroduce its previously controversial work-location tracking feature in Teams. This time, however, users will have the option to opt out.

Both the automatic language detection feature and AI-generated video recaps are expected to launch in April for Microsoft Teams on Windows and macOS.
