Microsoft Whiteboard Will Stop Working for Personal Accounts on August 22

Microsoft Whiteboard will stop supporting creation and editing for personal Microsoft accounts on August 22, 2026, as reported by Windows Central. The service will remain available, but active use will require a Microsoft Business account.

The change follows Microsoft’s decision to shut down Copilot Podcasts without offering users an option to export their files. Whiteboard users will at least receive a limited period to save their existing content before Microsoft deletes it.

Personal Microsoft Accounts Will Lose Editing Access

Starting August 22, 2026, users signed in with personal Microsoft accounts will no longer be able to create new whiteboards or edit existing ones.

Microsoft will temporarily keep saved whiteboards available in read-only form. During this period, users can view their boards and export any content they want to preserve.

Business account users will continue to access Whiteboard after the change.

Microsoft Will Delete Personal Whiteboards in September

The temporary access period will end on September 5, 2026.

Microsoft plans to permanently delete all whiteboards associated with personal Microsoft accounts on that date. After the deletion, users will no longer be able to open, recover, or export their saved boards.

Personal users should therefore export important whiteboards before September 5. Waiting until the final day could increase the risk of losing content if access problems occur.

Why Microsoft Is Making the Change

Microsoft is moving Whiteboard storage to OneDrive for Business. The company says the transition will support new features and other changes to the Whiteboard experience.

However, the new storage system will not support active Whiteboard use through personal Microsoft accounts. As a result, users will need a Microsoft Business account to create or modify whiteboards after August 22.

The change effectively removes Whiteboard as a free collaboration and brainstorming tool for personal users.

Microsoft Is Warning Users Inside Whiteboard

Microsoft has started displaying an in-app retirement notice to affected users.

The notification explains that personal accounts will lose creation and editing access on August 22. It also warns that Microsoft will delete saved whiteboards on September 5.

Users who want to keep diagrams, notes, plans, or collaborative boards should export them before the deletion deadline.

In other Microsoft news, Edge will block screenshots of protected PDF files stored in OneDrive in a future update. Microsoft has also paused its plan to remove the expanded people card from Outlook Classic.
