OpenAI will retire the official DALL.E GPT on August 30
OpenAI has quietly confirmed yet another change for ChatGPT users. The official DALL.E GPT now has a retirement date. Users have only a few weeks left before it is permanently retired.
OpenAI to retires DALL.E GPT, says ChatGPT Images is the future
According to OpenAI, the official DALL.E GPT will be removed from ChatGPT on August 30, 2026. Before that happens, the company recommends downloading any images users wish to keep.
The move doesn’t mean image generation is going away. Instead, OpenAI is directing users toward ChatGPT Images, which has become the company’s primary destination for creating and editing AI-generated images inside ChatGPT.
Speaking of existing projects, OpenAI says user-created GPTs with image generation enabled are not affected by this decision.
Do note that the retirement only applies to the official DALL.E GPT published by OpenAI. The change reflects OpenAI’s ongoing effort to simplify the ChatGPT experience. Rather than maintaining separate GPTs for similar tasks, the company has increasingly integrated features directly into ChatGPT itself.
That being said, users who frequently relied on the standalone DALL.E GPT should back up important creations before the deadline arrives. After August 30, those conversations and generated images may no longer be accessible through the retired GPT.
While the announcement landed quietly, it marks another step in OpenAI’s broader strategy of consolidating AI tools into a single, unified ChatGPT experience. Speaking of consolidating, let’s forget that the company has plans for ChatGPT super app, alonside its long-time partner Microsoft, which also recently confirmed Copilot super app will be launched later this year.
