A $1,000 Price for PS6 & Xbox Project Helix Could Result in Sales Disaster

A $1,000 price tag could seriously shake up the next console generation. A new Ampere Analysis forecast warns that PS6 and Xbox Helix sales could fall sharply if Sony and Microsoft push prices that high (via Video Games Chronicle).

$1,000 consoles could change the next-gen console market

Ampere’s scenario assumes Sony and Microsoft launch conventional next-generation consoles in 2028. At $1,000 each, combined five-year sales could fall 38% versus PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The impact would extend beyond hardware sales. Ampere estimates PlayStation and Xbox spending on games and services could be $3.4 billion lower by 2031.

That figure represents a 12% reduction compared with a scenario where both platforms launch at $700.

Rising component costs are already putting pressure on console pricing. The PS5 Pro launched at $700, while its current price reportedly sits at around $900. As for the PS6, hardware cost estimates put it at more than $900, although Sony has yet to announce either a release date or an official price.

Sony and Microsoft have several ways to avoid the $1,000 problem

Ampere outlines three possible approaches. Sony and Microsoft could delay their next consoles beyond 2028 and extend current hardware lifecycles.

They could also subsidize hardware more aggressively and introduce new monetization strategies. More digital sales and optimized distribution could help offset higher production costs.

The third option would involve changing the hardware strategy itself. Instead of chasing major graphics improvements, companies could build devices around different form factors and uses.

That approach echoes Nintendo’s Wii strategy, which prioritized a different experience instead of simply pushing graphical performance.

Xbox already appears open to that direction with Project Helix. The company is reportedly exploring a PC-console hybrid and different payment models.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma previously acknowledged the affordability problem, saying, “it will be hard to imagine that mass audiences can afford thousands of dollars to spend on a console generation.”

She also teased “radically different business models” for the future, while acknowledging that memory costs could affect Project Helix pricing.

The next console generation may need a different playbook

A $1,000 console could still attract enthusiasts, but Ampere’s forecast highlights the broader adoption problem. While the figure is only an estimate, some experts believe Project Helix could still carry a premium price tag.

If hardware costs remain elevated, Sony and Microsoft may need to rethink how next-generation consoles reach mainstream players.
