Amazon Launches Its Generative AI Assistant Alexa+ in the UK

Amazon Alexa+ UK

Amazon has officially launched its upgraded voice assistant, Alexa+, in the United Kingdom. The rollout marks the first European expansion for the generative AI product, which previously debuted in North America. Starting this week, customers can test the smarter, more conversational assistant through an invite-only Early Access program.

The updated service brings new capabilities designed to handle complex queries and complete multistep tasks autonomously.

Alexa+ brings upgraded conversational skills trained to understand local British accents

The new architecture abandons the rigid commands users previously needed to operate their smart speakers. Built on Amazon’s latest large language models, the software understands natural speech patterns and remembers context from earlier parts of a conversation.

A major focus for the UK release involved localizing the language model. Engineering teams based in Cambridge trained the system to understand regional British accents and local slang, ensuring it recognizes phrases without confusion.

It can execute complex multistep actions with localized third-party partners

Instead of just answering simple trivia questions or setting kitchen timers, the system can now execute actions across multiple third-party services from a single voice prompt. If a user asks to plan a dinner out, the assistant can secure a table via OpenTable and add the reservation directly to a connected calendar.

Amazon has also partnered with companies like JustEat to enable voice ordering for local takeaways, while Treatwell integration allows users to book salon appointments. The technology operates across multiple platforms, meaning users can access these new features on recent Echo smart speakers, smart displays, and Fire TV devices.

Early access availability and future subscription pricing details

Users who purchase a newly released Echo device will automatically bypass the waitlist for the Early Access program. Existing hardware owners can sign up online to receive an invitation over the coming weeks. Amazon is offering the service at no cost while it remains in the testing phase.

Once the early access period concludes, the company will charge £19.99 per month for a standalone subscription. People who already subscribe to Amazon Prime will receive the updated assistant at no additional cost as part of their existing membership benefits.
