Microsoft lifts the Windows 11 24H2 ban for affected Asus laptops

Some Asus laptop owners have been blocked from installing Windows 11 24H2 since last year in October. When trying to update, they got a blue screen with the message that the update couldn’t be installed.

The affected systems were the ASUS X415KA and X515KA. Asus worked with Microsoft to provide a BIOS update, which fixed this issue for systems that had a BIOS version lower than 311.

According to Microsoft’s health update document, if you’re in this predicament, all you need to do is to update the system from Settings > Windows Update. The BIOS update will be provided as a Critical Update (CU) for your system.

After your BIOS is updated, check again for Windows updates and you will finally find the Windows 11 24H2 update.

It sounds a bit complicated, but it should work if you follow Microsoft’s instructions. Microsoft doesn’t recommend performing a manual update to Windows 11 24H2 using the Installation Assistant or the media creation tool.

Just to be on the safe side, we would recommend downloading the BIOS update from the Asus website and installing it on a USB flash disk before performing the update. We also have a guide on how to update your BIOS when the PC doesn’t boot normally. It’s better to be safe than sorry, right?

If you’re an ASUS X415KA and X515KA owner, tell us in the comments below if you’ve had any problems with the BIOS or system update.
