Despite recent backlash surrounding Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, the Call of Duty franchise continues to dominate U.S. player engagement across Xbox and PlayStation. Weekly charts still place the series at the top, reinforcing its position as the most-played shooter ecosystem in North America.

Call of Duty’s combined ecosystem skews comparisons

Player rankings rely on the Call of Duty HQ metric, which merges engagement from Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Black Ops 7. This aggregation inflates overall activity and complicates direct comparisons with standalone releases like Battlefield 6.

Even so, the data highlights Call of Duty’s ability to retain players across multiple modes and entry points, something rival franchises still struggle to replicate.

Black Ops 7 launch shows mixed results

Reports indicate Black Ops 7 fell short of internal expectations, particularly in Europe. Opening-week sales reportedly dropped well below both Battlefield 6 and Black Ops 6, signaling fatigue among parts of the franchise’s audience despite strong U.S. engagement. The disconnect suggests regional differences in player preferences, rather than a global collapse in interest.

Battlefield 6 slips but remains stable

According to Circana player engagement data for the week ending December 13, 2025, Battlefield 6 ranked around seventh place, down from sixth the previous week. The drop came despite the availability of its free-to-play REDSEC battle royale mode.

Landing between sixth and seventh still reflects a healthy player base. However, the ranking underscores Battlefield’s struggle to match the scale and stickiness of Call of Duty’s broader ecosystem.

Some players now gravitate toward alternative live-service and extraction-style shooters such as ARC Raiders. This shift suggests Battlefield’s current battle royale formula no longer resonates as strongly as it once did, especially against competitors offering more persistent progression and evolving gameplay loops.

Battlefield 6 was also a part of recent controversy after fans spotted the use of AI in the new premium Battlefield 6 bundle. For now, Call of Duty’s multi-title strategy keeps it firmly on top, while Battlefield faces mounting pressure to realign with changing shooter trends.
