Dell Confirms SupportAssist Update is Causing BSOD Crashes on Windows PCs

SupportAssist Remediation 5.5.16.0 is causing BSOD crashes

dell confirms bsod

Dell has officially confirmed that a recent update to its SupportAssist software is responsible for blue-screen crashes and random reboots affecting some Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs.

The issue affects Dell SupportAssist Remediation 5.5.16.0 and Alienware SupportAssist Remediation 5.5.16.0. According to Dell, affected systems may display the 0xEF_DellSupportAss_BUGCHECK_CRITICAL_PROCESS BSOD error before rebooting unexpectedly.

Users began reporting crashes last week

Reports of the issue started surfacing last Friday, with many users describing systems that suddenly rebooted multiple times throughout the day. In some cases, affected PCs reportedly crashed roughly every 30 minutes, making systems nearly unusable for work or gaming.

Users across Dell and Alienware systems described random blue screens appearing without warning shortly after startup or during normal desktop use. The crashes also triggered concerns because many systems appeared stable before the recent SupportAssist update installed automatically.

Dell recommends disabling SupportAssist

Dell is currently advising affected users to disable the SupportAssist Remediation service or fully uninstall SupportAssist until a permanent fix becomes available.

The company says its engineering teams are actively investigating the issue and working on a long-term solution. Dell also noted that users still experiencing crashes after uninstalling the software should contact Dell support directly for further troubleshooting.

At the same time, Dell warned users that removing SupportAssist may also remove access to Dell-created repair points generated through Dell OS SupportAssist Recovery. That means some automated recovery and repair functions could stop working after the software is removed.

Another difficult week for Windows updates

The SupportAssist issue comes during another busy week for Windows-related support problems. Microsoft recently released Windows 11 KB5089549, which fixed incorrect BitLocker recovery prompt issues that affected some PCs after recent updates.

However, while the update resolved the BitLocker problem for many users, some Windows 11 users are now reporting installation failures and update-related issues with KB5089549 itself.

The combination of Dell’s SupportAssist crashes and recent Windows update complaints has created another frustrating week for users already dealing with ongoing system stability concerns across Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices.
