Edge Enterprise Users Will Soon Sync Passkeys Across Devices
Microsoft is preparing a major security upgrade for enterprise users by bringing passkey synchronization to Microsoft Edge starting in June 2026. The feature recently appeared on the Microsoft 365 Roadmap under ID 561652 and expands passwordless authentication support across workplace environments.
The update follows Microsoft’s consumer rollout of Edge passkey syncing in November 2025. Now, businesses using Edge will gain the same ability to securely store and synchronize passkeys across devices.
Enterprise passkeys are coming to Edge
Once the feature rolls out, enterprise users will be able to save passkeys directly inside Edge and sync them between supported devices. Microsoft says passkeys created in Edge will sync “seamlessly,” helping users sign in faster without relying on traditional passwords.
The company positions the feature as part of its broader push toward stronger authentication standards and a simplified sign-in experience for work accounts.
What passkeys actually do
Passkeys replace passwords with cryptographic authentication tied to a trusted device. Instead of typing a password, users authenticate using methods such as:
- Fingerprint scanning
- Facial recognition
- Device PINs
- Screen lock verification
The passkey remains stored inside the browser or device password manager and automatically appears during sign-ins on supported websites and services.
Why enterprises are adopting passkeys
Microsoft continues pushing passwordless authentication across its ecosystem, including recent passkey support inside Microsoft Entra.
For enterprise environments, synchronized passkeys could improve both security and usability. Organizations often struggle with weak passwords, password reuse, phishing attacks, and credential theft. Passkeys help reduce those risks because attackers cannot easily steal or reuse them like traditional credentials.
The feature may also reduce IT overhead tied to password resets and account recovery requests.
Microsoft continues expanding Edge security features
The passkey rollout arrives as Microsoft faces scrutiny over another Edge-related security discussion. Recent reports claimed Edge keeps decrypted passwords in memory, though Microsoft says the behavior is intentional and part of how the browser manages credentials internally.
Despite the controversy, Microsoft continues investing heavily in passwordless authentication and browser-based security improvements across its enterprise ecosystem.
Enterprise passkey synchronization for Edge currently targets a June 2026 rollout window.
