Edge Update Will Let Users Create Desktop Shortcuts for Specific Browser Profiles
Microsoft continues to refine its Edge browser with small usability improvements, and a new feature currently in development aims to make profile management easier.
According to Microsoft 365 Roadmap entry 558311, Microsoft Edge will soon introduce a native option that allows users to create desktop shortcuts for individual browser profiles.
Edge will add profile desktop shortcuts on Windows
The upcoming feature introduces a new toggle in Edge profile settings that lets users create or remove a profile-specific desktop shortcut directly from the browser.
Once enabled, the shortcut opens Edge using the selected profile automatically. This approach allows users to launch separate browsing environments without switching profiles manually after opening the browser.
The feature will be available only on Windows devices, with the rollout expected to begin in May.
Simplifying access for multiple browser profiles
At the moment, Edge does not offer a built-in method for creating profile-specific desktop shortcuts. Users typically rely on manual workarounds or command-line shortcuts if they want separate launch icons for different profiles.
The new toggle simplifies the process and makes it easier for people who rely on multiple profiles. This includes users who keep work, personal, or project-specific browsing environments separated.
Opening the correct profile directly from the desktop can reduce friction for users who frequently switch between accounts during the day.
Part of ongoing Edge usability improvements
While the feature may seem minor, it reflects Microsoft’s broader focus on incremental usability improvements across the browser.
Microsoft has recently tested several interface changes in Edge, including a redesigned permissions page and a new button designed to make it easier to set Edge as the default browser.
At the same time, the company has also removed certain features from the browser. One example is the Collections feature, which Microsoft recently discontinued in Edge.
The upcoming profile desktop shortcut option shows that the company continues refining everyday workflows while adjusting which tools remain part of the browser experience.
