ERROR_CHECKING_FILE_SYSTEM comes with the following message 712 (0x2C8) Checking file system on %wZ, indicating that Windows is scanning your drive for errors. This can sometimes be a problem, so let’s see how we can fix it.
How can I fix ERROR_CHECKING_FILE_SYSTEM?
1. Run the chkdsk scan
- Press the Windows key + S and type cmd. Choose Run as administrator.
- Run the following command
chkdsk /f /r C:
- Press Y to confirm and restart your PC.
- Wait for the scan to finish.
2. Check SMART data
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Next, run
wmic diskdrive get status
- If the message says Pred Fail, it means that your drive should be replaced.
You can also use HDD health checker software, or any other method to check the SSD health on Windows 11.
3. Update disk drivers
- Press the Windows key + X and choose Device Manager.
- Locate your drive on the list, right-click it, and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for updated driver software.
- Wait for the scan to finish.

4. Other tips to try
- Scan your PC for malware.
- Monitor your PC for future disk checks.
- If the PC is frequently scanning the disk, it’s possible that the disk is failing and it needs replacement.
