Mozilla has finally enabled new Profile Management in Firefox Nightly. This massive update introduces new profile creation and customization options, including themes, avatars, and names to keep your work and personal browsing separate. Additionally, Firefox makes switching between profiles and managing them a breeze via the hamburger menu.

Mozilla Firefox’s revamped profiles feature allows you to create profiles from the hamburger menu itself, where previously you had to use about:profiles. Everything is now baked into Firefox’s main menu, aka the hamburger icon, to make things easier for you.

Firefox new Profile creation and customization

When you create a new profile, you’ll get a wizard on “about:newprofile” page to name your profile, such as “Work” or “Personal.” You can choose a theme from Light, Dark, and System Default, along with new themes Mozilla offers, such as “Marigold”, “Lichten”, “Magnolia”, “Lavender”, Dark, “Ocean”, “Terracotta”, and “Moss”. You can select an avatar from six different icons to represent your profile. These avatars make it easier to differentiate between profiles, especially when the Firefox icons appear on the Windows taskbar.

“Customize your new profile.
Each profile keeps its unique browsing history and settings separate from your other profiles. Plus, Nightly’s strong privacy protections are on by default. Learn more”.

Managing and Switching Profiles

When you select the newly available “Manage Profiles” option in the menu, you’ll see a list of the profiles you’re using, complete with avatars. This interface resembles Chrome’s profile picker UI, making it simpler to choose which profile to run. The Profile selector has an option checked at the bottom: “Choose a profile when Firefox opens.”

“Choose a Nightly profile

Keep your work and personal browsing, including things like passwords and bookmarks, totally separate. Or create profiles for everyone who uses this device.”

Users can now easily switch between profiles, separating and managing school, work, and personal browsing data. Click on the hamburger menu and select the current profile (originally named “Original Profile”), then click the profile name to switch to another profile.

Firefox’s new profile management system allows users to switch between different profiles without having to close and reopen the browser. The profiles are visibly separate, making it easy to see which profile you are currently using. This visual distinction, especially with avatars, helps users quickly identify the active profile, making sure profiles run separately with their settings, history, and data.

Each profile maintains its unique browsing history and settings, ensuring a clear separation between different types of web activities. Plus, Firefox privacy protections are enabled by default. Firefox shows different icons on the Windows 11 taskbar for profiles to differentiate which profile you are using. The hamburger menu also reveals the same.

At the moment, running different profiles simultaneously is not possible; only the active profile appears running on the taskbar. This could be another issue Mozilla will address soon. The organization is also planning to provide Firefox Refresh for selected profiles.

Firefox supports multiple profiles, but the customization and new profile creation experience wasn’t great till now, as users had to visit about:profiles or run a command from the Run dialog in Windows. This will be a thing of the past when the new profiles Mozilla is working on for Firefox land in Release.

After retiring Do Not Track, Firefox is getting HDR support for Windows, working on a manual tab unloading option in the tab context menu, and adding a Proofread prompt to AI chatbots.
