Check the PSU wattage without opening the PC

When you need to check your PSU wattage but don’t want to open your PC, there are only a few methods to do it. The power supply manufacturers put a sticker on the component with all the data. However, most times, you will find it on the inside. If you’re lucky, you will at least be able to check the model number on the outside of the case.

How do I check the PSU wattage?

1. Check the manufacturer’s website

  1. Identify the brand and model number of your computer or PSU.
  2. Visit the official website of the PSU or computer manufacturer.
  3. Use their search feature to find your specific PSU or computer model.
  4. Look at the detailed specifications provided to find the PSU wattage.

By visiting the manufacturer’s website, you can find accurate and detailed information about your PSU directly from the source. This method ensures that you have the correct details.

2. Refer to the documentation

  1. Retrieve any user manuals, warranty cards, or documentation that came with your computer or PSU.
  2. Look for sections related to hardware specifications.
  3. Check the information to find the PSU wattage.

Using the product documentation, you can find the wattage of your PSU. This method is reliable, especially if you still have the original documents.

3. Check System Configuration via Service Tag (Dell Computers)

  1. Locate the Service Tag on your Dell computer.
  2. Visit the Dell Support website.
  3. Enter your Service Tag in the provided search box.
  4. Navigate to the system configuration section to see details about the PSU.

For Dell computers, using the Service Tag to check system configuration online is a straightforward way to find out PSU wattage without opening the case.

4. Visual inspection of PSU Model Number

  1. Look for the PSU model number from outside the case, if visible.
  2. Note down the model number and search it online.
  3. Identify the wattage based on the model number.

By identifying and searching the PSU model number, you can often find the wattage information without having to physically open the computer.

Unfortunately, there is no software app to tell you the PSU wattage simply because this component is connected to the motherboard only with power cables. There is no sensor or software component that can determine the wattage. By using third-party system information tools you can only see some of the components’ wattage consumption but that’s it.

So, the only ways to check your PSU wattage without opening your PC is to find the manufacturer label on the outside of the case, or find the documentation you received when you bought the PC or component.
