LibreOffice Challenges Microsoft Office Ribbon as Usability Standard

LibreOffice is pushing back against one of Microsoft Office’s strongest selling points: the ribbon interface. In a recent blog post, The Document Foundation argues that many users choose Microsoft Office mainly because of the ribbon, but says that preference may not reflect proven usability advantages.

The ribbon, introduced in Office 2007 and redesigned in 2021, groups commands into large tabbed toolbars. It has influenced other software and even inspired LibreOffice’s own “Tabbed” mode.

“No Proof” the Ribbon Is More Ergonomic

LibreOffice claims there is no objective evidence that ribbon-style interfaces are more efficient or user-friendly. The project argues that the ribbon’s popularity largely stems from Microsoft’s market dominance rather than superior design.

According to LibreOffice, many users evaluate alternative office suites based on how closely they resemble Microsoft Office instead of judging interface quality independently.

Multiple UI Options vs. One Paradigm

LibreOffice highlights its flexibility as a key difference. Users can switch between several layouts, including classic toolbars, compact variants, contextual toolbars, a sidebar-focused view, and a ribbon-style interface.

The project contrasts this with what it describes as a single enforced design approach in Microsoft Office and similar suites.

Broader Differences Beyond Design

Beyond the interface debate, LibreOffice emphasizes open-source access, strong privacy positioning, support for macros in multiple languages, and native Open Document Format (ODF) support.

Meanwhile, Microsoft continues expanding Microsoft 365 with upcoming Agent Mode and Smart Editing features, new DLP protections for Copilot, and an Outlook update designed to eliminate meeting conflicts automatically.

The debate ultimately comes down to user priorities: interface familiarity, ecosystem integration, privacy, or customization.

What do you think? Do you prefer Microsoft Office because of the ribbon interface, or are there other reasons? Let us know in the comments.
