Meta is expanding its artificial intelligence offerings for businesses with the global rollout of Meta Business Agent, an AI-powered assistant designed to help companies manage customer interactions across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger.

The launch follows a testing phase that began in October 2024 under the name “Business AI” in India, Mexico, and Brazil. According to Meta, more than one million active shops participated in the pilot program, providing feedback and usage data that helped shape the final product.

The announcement comes shortly after Meta introduced premium subscription options for some of its services, highlighting the company’s broader push to integrate AI across both consumer and business products.

AI assistant for customer engagement

Meta Business Agent is designed to help businesses deliver personalized customer experiences while reducing the workload associated with managing large volumes of messages.

The AI assistant can answer customer questions, qualify leads, schedule appointments, and recommend products directly from a company’s catalog. It operates across Meta’s messaging platforms, allowing businesses to maintain consistent communication with customers regardless of where conversations begin.

One of the platform’s notable features is its ability to generate daily morning briefings. These summaries provide businesses with an overview of customer conversations that may have occurred overnight, helping teams quickly catch up on missed interactions.

Meta also says the agent can adapt its responses to match a company’s brand voice, creating a more personalized experience for customers.

Initial rollout targets selected businesses

The first phase of the rollout is being made available to selected businesses already using WhatsApp Business, Instagram Pro, Messenger, and Meta Business Suite.

By automating routine customer service tasks, Meta hopes the tool will help businesses respond faster to inquiries while freeing employees to focus on more complex issues.

The company believes AI-powered support can be particularly valuable for small and medium-sized businesses that may not have dedicated customer service teams available around the clock.

Future capabilities planned

Future updates are expected to expand the agent’s role beyond customer support. Planned capabilities include market research, product insights, calendar management, and competitive intelligence tools that could help businesses make more informed decisions.

The company is also introducing a new discovery feature for WhatsApp users. Soon, customers will be able to search for businesses directly through the WhatsApp search bar and identify companies that offer AI-supported interactions.

Meta Business Agent Platform for enterprises

Alongside the consumer-facing rollout, Meta announced the Meta Business Agent Platform, a new infrastructure offering aimed at larger organizations and developers.

The platform provides tools for building, customizing, and deploying AI agents at scale. Businesses will be able to connect their agents to third-party services such as Shopify, Zendesk, and Shopee, allowing AI assistants to access business data and workflows more effectively.

Meta says the platform includes enterprise-grade controls, guardrails, analytics, and performance metrics that enable organizations to define how their AI agents behave and interact with customers.

Recent reports indicated that Meta had explored an AI-powered employee monitoring program intended to track workplace activity. The proposal reportedly generated backlash from employees and privacy advocates, prompting the company to revise aspects of the planned tracking system. Meta later eased the controversial tracking program by adding new controls, including a 30-minute pause option.

Despite the controversy, Meta remains committed to expanding its AI portfolio. With the global rollout of Meta Business Agent, the company is positioning AI assistants as a key tool for businesses looking to improve customer engagement, streamline operations, and scale support across digital platforms.
