Meta’s journey towards being a futuristic company using AI is currently facing a new wave of criticism due to a report indicating that the organization has been collecting employee data beyond what anyone had anticipated.

As previously reported by Reuters, Meta’s internal initiative referred to as the Model Capability Initiative (MCI) aims at training its AI agents by observing how employees use their applications. The program has the ability to monitor activities such as clicks and mouse movements, among others, in over 200 applications and websites.

Meta’s MCI initiative now has some relaxation for employees

While the monitoring may not be of much concern, there is now an increased fear about the data collected during the process. That’s why the company is now scaling back the MCI tracking system.

In two reports citing an internal memo, The Information and Reuters noted that Stephane Kasriel, a vice president in Meta’s AI model-building Superintelligence Labs unit has notified employees that Meta now plans to let them “pause” the tracking for up to 30 minutes in the event they need to “check something personal.”

Reports also mention that Meta has made “a few optimizations” to lower the effect of tracking system on employees’ computer battery life. This is after complaints from employees who reported that the tracking tools was consuming too much data, eventually increasing home internet consumption.

“While we remain confident in the privacy protections we put in place at launch, ‌which went through several layers of risk review, we have heard your concerns about personal data on work devices, battery life, and wanting more control over when capturing happens,” Kasriel wrote in the memo.
