Microsoft Announces Retirement of Access Database Compare Tool
Microsoft has confirmed that it will retire the Database Compare tool in Microsoft Access, marking the end of a long-standing utility used by developers and IT professionals.
The tool allowed users to compare two Access databases, making it especially useful for tracking schema changes and identifying structural differences between files.
Why Microsoft is removing the feature
Microsoft says the tool depends on outdated components that no longer meet the requirements of modern Office environments.
Because of this, the company cannot maintain or reliably support it going forward, leading to its removal from future Office distributions.
Users can continue using the tool until June 20, 2026. After that date, it will be fully discontinued and no longer available for download or use.
Affected Office and Access versions
The change impacts multiple versions across the Office ecosystem.
Affected versions include Access 2019, Access 2021, Access 2024, Microsoft 365 subscriptions, and standalone Office 2021 and Office 2024 releases.
Microsoft also confirmed that supporting DLLs and configuration files located in the DCF folder will be removed.
Alternatives users should consider
Microsoft advises customers to prepare migration plans to avoid disruptions.
Recommended alternatives include AccessDiff, AccdbMerge, DataWeigher, and Total Access Detective, which provide similar database comparison capabilities.
Broader Microsoft changes continue
The decision reflects Microsoft’s ongoing effort to streamline Office and remove legacy components that are difficult to maintain.
At the same time, the company is working on faster file search across Office apps and placing Microsoft 365 Copilot behind a subscription model for Office apps.
Microsoft has also outlined plans to improve overall quality and reliability in Windows 11 throughout the year.
