Microsoft Begins Rolling Out Copilot Notebook Auto-Summary Feature
Microsoft has recently labeled Copilot as a top productivity app on Windows 11, but the company is not slowing down. A new AI-powered experience is now rolling out to Microsoft 365 users, bringing automated insights directly into Copilot Notebooks.
According to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center (message ID MC1182698), Microsoft is introducing a smart landing page for Copilot Notebooks that automatically generates summaries and key insights from notebook references.
AI-generated overview becomes the new default
With the update, users opening a Copilot Notebook will immediately see a high-level overview of its contents. They no longer need to manually scan documents, notes, or linked materials to understand what the notebook contains.
The system uses a fine-tuned Copilot prompt to analyze existing notebook data and extract the most relevant information. It then organizes that information into a structured summary designed to highlight key themes and insights.
The feature first appeared in public preview back in November. Although general availability was originally planned for January through February, Microsoft delayed the rollout. Deployment has now started earlier this month and is expected to be completed by mid-March.
License requirements and admin guidance
The AI-generated overview will become the default landing experience for licensed users of Microsoft 365 Copilot. Access requires an active Microsoft 365 Copilot license.
Microsoft enables the feature by default, and administrators do not need to manually activate it. The update does not change existing workflows, user permissions, or data governance policies.
Organizations that use Copilot Notebooks will automatically see the new interface once the rollout reaches their tenant. Microsoft advises admins to review Copilot license assignments to ensure eligible users receive access.
The company also recommends updating internal documentation and training materials to reflect the new landing page experience.
Mobile expansion planned
Microsoft confirmed plans to expand the AI-powered Notebook overview to Android and iOS devices in a future update. The company has not shared a specific timeline for mobile availability.
The update comes at a time when Copilot remains under scrutiny. Recent reports highlighted issues where Microsoft 365 Copilot summarized confidential emails in ways that appeared to bypass certain Data Loss Prevention (DLP) safeguards.
Meanwhile, Microsoft continues to push forward with additional AI enhancements. The company is preparing to introduce Express Voice Enrollment in Microsoft Teams, further expanding its AI-driven productivity features across Microsoft 365.
