Microsoft Teams to Introduce Express Voice Enrollment in April

Microsoft Teams Express Voice Enrollment

Microsoft is continuing to expand Microsoft Teams with new AI-driven capabilities, and after recent interface changes like the unified audio/video control panel and the removal of the Quit option from the Taskbar menu, another major update is on the way.

According to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center under message ID MC1197146, the company is introducing express voice enrollment in Teams, a feature designed to simplify how users create voice profiles during meetings.

Express voice enrollment arrives in Teams

The new feature will automatically prompt users who have not yet enrolled their voice to register during an active meeting. Instead of manually navigating through settings, users will simply speak during the session to begin the enrollment process.

Microsoft classifies the update as a major change. It will be enabled by default for all enterprise tenants, excluding EDU environments.

The rollout timeline has shifted slightly. Targeted Release is now planned for early April, while General Availability is expected by the end of April.

Replacing manual voice registration

Previously, voice enrollment required manual steps, which limited adoption. With express voice enrollment, Microsoft replaces that workflow with a more automated experience directly inside meetings.

The goal is to accelerate the use of voice-based AI features in Teams. Once users complete enrollment, they unlock advanced capabilities such as voice isolation and individualized speaker recognition.

These features prove especially useful in shared meeting rooms where multiple participants speak from the same device. Personalized voice profiles help Teams distinguish between speakers more accurately.

Better transcription and Copilot insights

Voice profiles also improve the accuracy of live transcription and AI-powered meeting summaries generated by Copilot in Teams. By recognizing individual speakers, the system can attribute comments correctly and generate clearer insights.

This aligns with Microsoft’s broader push to embed AI deeper into productivity tools across Microsoft 365.

Admin controls and policy management

Administrators retain control over the feature. They can manage express voice enrollment using the PassiveVoiceEnroll setting within the csTeamsAIPolicy PowerShell cmdlets.

Organizations that previously disabled voice enrollment through policy will not see the feature automatically re-enabled. Microsoft advises admins to review compliance requirements and update internal documentation before deployment.

Admins who prefer not to enable the feature can proactively disable the PassiveVoiceEnroll setting ahead of the Targeted Release phase.

While Microsoft continues to enhance Teams with AI-focused updates, not every change has been welcomed by users. The company is also rolling out a feature that promotes Microsoft Edge when users open certain links, a move that has sparked criticism.
