Microsoft is giving IT departments a better way to handle shared logins with a new Edge for Business feature, which is now generally available. According to the company, secure password deployment lets admins push encrypted, autofill-ready credentials directly to users—cutting down on risky workarounds like emails or sticky notes.

These passwords live in the Edge password manager, tied to users’ work profiles on managed Windows devices. They’re ready for autofill but can’t be seen, copied, or exported—unless the target site exposes the password in plain text. This keeps access simple for employees while locking out unnecessary risks.

Behind the scenes, the feature is controlled through the Microsoft 365 admin center, where IT teams can assign, update, or revoke credentials. The entire system is built on Microsoft’s Information Protection SDK and linked to Entra ID, so encryption and decryption are automatic and identity-based—no key management needed.

Microsoft does flag a minor caveat. While users can’t access the passwords directly, someone with enough motivation might still uncover them using developer tools in the browser. That’s why Microsoft recommends using the DeveloperToolsAvailability policy to lock those tools down.

Secure password deployment is free for Microsoft 365 Business Premium, E3, and E5 customers. To get started, admins need Edge or Global admin roles and can set it up from the Customization Settings tab of any Edge policy in the admin center.

This update doesn’t completely eliminate the challenges of password sharing, but it’s a cleaner, more secure solution for organizations that deal with shared logins regularly.
