Microsoft Faces Backlash Over New Floating Copilot Button in Excel
Users say the new Excel Copilot button blocks content and cannot be properly turned off
Microsoft is facing renewed criticism after introducing a floating Copilot button directly inside Excel worksheets, following the recent rollout of Copilot Agent mode across Office apps and Microsoft’s broader AI integration push.
As Neowin writes, the new Copilot button now appears in the bottom-right corner of spreadsheets and automatically overlays the worksheet interface. Users say Microsoft currently offers no proper way to fully disable the feature.
New Copilot Button Appears Inside Worksheets
The floating button gives users quick access to several AI-powered Excel tools. Hovering over it displays shortcuts such as “Research with Copilot,” “Create a table,” and “Teach me something with Excel.”
Clicking the button opens the Copilot side panel inside Excel.
Microsoft appears to position the feature as a productivity shortcut designed to make AI tools easier to access during spreadsheet work.
Users Say the Feature Is Distracting
Many Excel users argue the button feels intrusive rather than helpful, especially in large spreadsheets where screen space matters.
Complaints from users include the button obscuring worksheet data, interfering with screenshots, blocking scrollbar interaction, and reducing usable workspace. Some users say the feature becomes especially frustrating on smaller laptop displays.
The criticism reflects broader concerns surrounding Microsoft’s increasingly aggressive Copilot rollout across Windows and Office products.
Docking the Button Does Not Fully Remove It
Microsoft currently allows users to “dock” the Copilot button. However, users point out that this does not actually disable the feature.
Docking simply collapses the floating button into a smaller side caret that can still expand back into the worksheet overlay.
Many users argue that this behavior does not provide meaningful customization or control over the interface.
Excel Feedback Portal Flooded With Complaints
Users on Microsoft’s Excel feedback portal are now demanding a proper toggle to disable Copilot entirely inside worksheets.
Others want Microsoft to return Copilot to the traditional ribbon interface instead of placing persistent floating controls directly over spreadsheets.
Some users also criticized Microsoft for frequently re-enabling or reinstalling Copilot-related features during updates, even after earlier attempts to remove or minimize them.
The Bigger Frustration Is About Control
The backlash does not appear to center around AI itself. Instead, many users say the real issue involves forced visibility and the lack of customization options.
For productivity software like Excel, where precision and workspace efficiency matter, users argue that persistent floating UI elements create unnecessary clutter and distractions.
The controversy also highlights growing tension between Microsoft’s AI-first strategy and users who prefer a cleaner, more traditional Office experience.
