Microsoft Launches Copilot Checkout for AI Chat Shopping
Microsoft is taking AI shopping to the next level with a new Copilot Checkout feature, which the company is now testing for US users. The feature allows customers to buy products directly within the AI chat, without leaving the conversation. It’s powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open standard built by OpenAI and Stripe, which also drives ChatGPT’s Instant Checkout feature.
The feature is currently being tested with major brands like Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Ashley Furniture, and select Etsy sellers. Shopify merchants are automatically eligible, while other merchants can join via a simple onboarding process using PayPal or Stripe. Microsoft has also opened a merchant application form for additional access.
Copilot Checkout is initially available on Copilot.com and will expand across Bing, MSN, and Microsoft Edge. Users can search for items and complete purchases right in chat, while businesses retain all customer and transaction data.
Besides checkouts, Microsoft is experimenting with brand AI agents for Shopify stores. These AI assistants can help customers discover the right products, complete purchases, and even suggest complementary items. Businesses can integrate these agents directly into their websites to offer a smoother shopping experience.
Copilot Checkout aims to meet users where they are, making it easier to browse, buy, and interact with brands in one seamless chat experience. For merchants, it’s a great chance to engage customers more effectively while leveraging AI-powered shopping tools.
