Microsoft is preparing a new AI-powered feature for OneDrive called Suggested Rename. According to Microsoft 365 Roadmap entry 564909, the feature will use Copilot to recommend clearer and more descriptive file names based on file content.

The feature is currently listed on the Microsoft 365 Roadmap and is expected to roll out to the web version of OneDrive in June 2026.

Copilot will suggest better file names automatically

Suggested Rename works by analyzing the contents of a file after it is uploaded to OneDrive. Copilot then generates recommended file names that better describe what the file contains.

When the rename window appears, users will see three suggested names. They can choose one of the recommendations or keep the original file name instead.

Microsoft says the feature is designed to make files easier to organize, search, and identify later.

Suggestions can appear during uploads or manual renaming

The Suggested Rename feature can appear in multiple situations inside OneDrive.

Users may see recommendations immediately after uploading a file. Suggestions can also appear when manually renaming an existing file.

Microsoft may also surface the recommendations through toast notifications inside the OneDrive web interface.

Office files, PDFs, images, and Markdown supported

The feature will support several common file types at launch.

Supported formats include:

  • Word documents
  • PowerPoint presentations
  • Excel spreadsheets
  • PDF files
  • Markdown files
  • Images

Microsoft has not confirmed whether additional file formats will be added later.

OneDrive changes continue across Microsoft services

The OneDrive ecosystem has seen several changes recently.

Microsoft recently confirmed that Samsung Gallery will lose OneDrive sync support. The company also explained why some Teams meeting recordings suddenly disappear from OneDrive or SharePoint storage.

Suggested Rename appears to be one of the next AI-focused additions coming to the platform as Microsoft continues integrating Copilot deeper into its cloud services.
