Microsoft Plans to Add a New OneDrive Shortcuts Folder for Shared Content

Microsoft is working on a new OneDrive feature designed to make shared folder shortcuts easier to manage. According to Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 565028, users will soon have the option to store shared folder shortcuts inside a dedicated Shortcuts folder instead of having them appear directly in the root of their OneDrive.

The update aims to address a common issue for users who rely heavily on shared content across OneDrive, SharePoint, and Microsoft Teams. As organizations increasingly use shared workspaces, OneDrive’s root directory can quickly become crowded with shortcut links, making it harder to keep personal files organized.

New Shortcuts Folder Coming to OneDrive

Currently, OneDrive offers an “Add shortcut to My files” option that lets users create quick links to shared folders. These shortcuts can come from OneDrive, SharePoint, or Teams and appear alongside regular files and folders in the user’s main OneDrive directory.

With the upcoming update, users will gain a new option to place these shortcuts inside a dedicated Shortcuts folder.

Microsoft says OneDrive will automatically create the folder the first time a user chooses to organize shortcuts this way. The folder will feature a unique color and a building-style icon to help distinguish it from regular folders.

The company notes that despite its customized appearance, the folder will behave like any standard OneDrive folder.

Users Will Keep Full Control

Users will be able to move, rename, share, or delete the Shortcuts folder if they prefer a different setup.

This flexibility allows users to adopt the new feature without changing existing workflows.

Rollout Expected in July 2026

Microsoft lists the feature as currently in development. According to the roadmap, the rollout is expected to begin in July 2026. As with all Microsoft 365 roadmap entries, the timeline could change before public availability.

The announcement follows several recent OneDrive-related changes. Microsoft recently confirmed that Samsung Gallery will lose OneDrive sync support, and the company has also warned Mac users running Office 2019 that they could experience reduced functionality after upcoming security certificate changes take effect later this year.

For now, OneDrive users can expect a simpler way to organize shared-folder shortcuts once the feature begins rolling out.
