Microsoft Purview will finally support user search allowing managers to look up employees within their organizations

Microsoft is finally updating its Purview platform, known for its comprehensive list of security policies, to support user search. The new functionality will allow every user, regardless of privilege, to look up employees within their organization, including their names and emails.

Those users with privileges such as IT admins, security experts, and managers will be able to assign role groups and admin units, effectively turning Purview into a database for various company information.

Our global search feature now enables you to search for users within your organization. You’ll find basic information such as names and email addresses. Additionally, if you have role management privileges, you can view assigned role groups and admin units. This means now you can search for navigational results, data, learning resources, and also for users within your organization.

The user search functionality will be added to Microsoft Purview in July 2024, for all web users. This coincides with the general release of the new unified portal, announced by the Redmond-based tech giant a while ago.

Similar to the new functionality, the new portal will allow IT admins, managers, and cybersecurity experts to access data security, data governance, and risk and compliance solutions for all data, no matter where this data is located. They can also access other settings, such as global search, recommendations, and roles and permissions management, everything within a single page.

Along with the new user search functionality, Microsoft Purview can now act as a database, as well, which can be quite useful in security (but not limited to) situations where employees need to be identified.

Plus, having all the necessary information at hand makes it easier to manage security breaches, and cyberattacks, as well as making it easier to assess the situation at hand. The new updated Purview could solve many of the security issues Microsoft is ongoingly having.
