Windows 11 KB5086672 Released to Fix 0x80073712 Installation Error
Late last month, Microsoft released KB5079391 preview for Windows 11 version 24H2 and 25H2 with Smart App Control, Narrator, and File Explorer improvements. However, many users reported that after installing this non-security update, they were hit by installation error 0x80073712.
After a few days, the company confirmed the issue and pulled the update, noting that “Some devices might encounter the following error while installing this update: Some update files are missing or have problems. We’ll try to download the update again later. Error code: (0x80073712).”
KB5086672 hotfix resolves the 0x80073712 installation error caused by the March 2026 non-security update
If you are among the ones affected by the installation error when trying to install the KB5079391 update, the good news is that the issue has finally been resolved. Microsoft has released an out-of-band update, KB5086672, to fix installation issues caused by the March 2026 optional update for Windows 11 version 24H2 and 25H2.
According to Microsoft, affected users can now install the update successfully by checking for updates in Windows Update. If you want to manually install the update, you can do so by downloading it from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
It’s worth noting that this hotfix includes all features and improvements from KB5079391. However, some features are rolling out gradually and may not appear immediately after installation.
