After making Tab Groups available for Firefox Nightly, Mozilla is now experimenting with generative AI to organize similar tabs into groups. Here’s how the AI-powered “Smart Tab Groups” work in Firefox, as we spotted.
We’ve seen Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome use AI to organize similar open tabs into groups, Firefox’s AI-powered tab grouping works similarly, but with a different implementation.
While creating a tab group when you select”Add Tab to New Group” option, Firefox informs users in the dialog box that it can “Suggest tabs to group” and reveals that it “uses AI to suggest tabs and group names. It also warns that “Some suggestions may be inaccurate”.
The system pre-populates the tab group name based on the open tabs. After clicking “Done” and right-clicking ona tab group name, an option to “suggest more tabs for the group” appears.
In our testing, Firefox’s AI accurately identified most similar tabs and provided relevant group names, such as “Windows Discussion,” “Search,” and “Google Accounts.
How to enable AI-powered Tab Grouping in Firefox
- Launch latest Firefox Nightly
- Visit about:config
- Find and enable “browser.tabs.groups.smart.enabled” Pref value to “true”.
While the feature still needs to evolve to match the organization of tabs into groups in Chrome and Microsoft Edge, it’s certainly a good start. Just when it seemed that Firefox was falling behind in the AI race, Mozilla delivers a surprise.
This is not the first time Mozilla has used AI in Firefox. In fact, they used AI to generate alt text for images in PDF documents. Of course, Firefox already provides several AI chatbots with the proofreading feature, and even supports Deepseek in the sidebar. And “Solo AI” is a Mozilla product that lets you create a website and associate your own domain with it.
Recently, Mozilla added vertical tabs and a new profile management feature in Nightly that makes it easier to create new profiles and switch between them.
