New Xbox Game Pass Codename “TRITON” Could Bring Back Classic Titles
Microsoft is continuing to evolve Xbox Game Pass amid ongoing rumors of pricing changes and potential partnerships, but a newly spotted codename is now drawing attention from the community.
According to Pure Xbox, keen-eyed users have discovered a possible new Xbox Game Pass codename, “TRITON,” which was spotted by the Better xCloud account on X. While details remain limited, the discovery has already sparked speculation about a new direction for the service.
“TRITON” Codename Spotted in the Wild
The codename was initially linked to a small batch of titles, including DOOM 64, Psychonauts, and other retro-style classics. However, recent findings suggest that the list has expanded to include at least 12 additional games.
All of the titles associated with TRITON so far appear to be older first-party or Xbox Game Studios releases. This has led many to believe that Microsoft could be preparing a new Game Pass tier focused specifically on legacy content.
A Retro-Focused Game Pass Tier?
The idea of a classic or retro-focused subscription aligns with Microsoft’s previously stated interest in expanding backward compatibility. If that initiative continues, a dedicated tier for older titles would make strategic sense.
Some early theories suggest that TRITON could represent:
- A lower-cost Game Pass subscription
- A catalog built around classic Xbox titles
- A new backward compatibility-focused program
Adding to the speculation, titles like DOOM 64 and Psychonauts were recently made free on the Xbox Store for a limited time. While Microsoft has not confirmed any connection, the timing has raised questions about whether these promotions tie into the TRITON initiative.
Still Unconfirmed, But Worth Watching
Despite the growing buzz, Microsoft has not officially acknowledged the TRITON codename. It’s also possible that the label refers to an internal testing phase or a completely different project.
Until Microsoft provides confirmation, the true nature of TRITON remains uncertain. Still, the discovery hints that the company may be exploring new ways to expand Game Pass beyond its current model.
In the meantime, Xbox continues to push forward with new content, including recently announced Free Play Days titles and additional Game Pass games revealed during the latest Partner Preview event.
